Artist Statement
Station 21 is a contemporary mixed-media encaustic collage painting that speaks of time passing. The bold gestural underpainting when layered with the vintage photograph, connects the past and the present. The viewer feels a strong sense of place as a connection is forged between Toronto then and now.
In the historic photo, my partner’s maternal Grandfather stands in front of 65 Ford Street, a former fire station in Toronto. He told me once a story of taking a corner too fast—the horse-drawn fire wagon overturned, and they never reached the fire. This piece honours the strength, speed, and risks these horses took alongside the firefighters, highlighting the deep connection between humans and the animals who once raced through city streets to save lives.
