Artist Statement
This piece is inspired by a World War I–era photograph from my partner’s family archive. His maternal grandmother, Edith, stands with her brother and sister at the edge of a waterfall near the family farm on the Bruce Peninsula. The image captures a moment from a special family day—just before he heads off to war, leaving home behind.
I layered wax, pigment, and collage to extend the image beyond the camera’s frame.
August 1914 is a reimagined narrative and a quiet tribute to the unknown futures carried by those who stayed—and those who left.
