Artist Statement
This work reimagines the iconic figure of Rosie the Riveter—an enduring symbol of strength and resilience—through a distinctly Canadian lens. Elbows Up! is a movement that united Canadians, revealing a patriotic strength we didn’t know we had. It helped those who aren’t comfortable marching with placards in the streets find a way to be heard: voting in political elections, singing O Canada! at hockey games, waving the Canadian flag, and choosing to buy Canadian. These everyday acts become powerful gestures of resistance. Elbows Up! celebrates the unexpected strength of our collective voice and the unifying power of determined action.
