Artist Statement
Remnants of Decay explores the intersection of industrial remnants and environmental degradation. Using a found rusty chain and discarded packaging coated in encaustic medium as a substrate, I embrace an experimental approach, allowing the materials to dictate the form and texture of the work. The 3-D sculpture bursts from a traditional frame, with the rusted chain hanging down and casting a shadow on the wall. The rusted metal, weathered and transformed by time, symbolizes decay and abandonment, while the packaging represents our throwaway culture and the environmental toll of consumer waste. The shadow emphasizes the tension between nature’s processes and human impact.
By repurposing these materials, I aim to highlight the persistence of discarded objects in the environment long after their intended use. This piece challenges viewers to reflect on the environmental footprint of consumer waste and the ongoing dialogue between creation and destruction in our world.
