Artist Statement
In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a concept that sees beauty in imperfection. Wabi refers to the beauty found in asymmetrical, uneven or unbalanced things, Sabi is the beauty of aged things and speaks to the impermanence of life through the passage of time. This encaustic monotype embraces this aesthetic. It captures the subtle nuances of imperfection, celebrating the irregularities and asymmetry inherent in its creation. The wax beaded up and separated on the hot plate giving areas of the print a gentle patina of implied age.
